Our 5-minute exclusive interview with PK, photography enthusiast

Hi PK!

When did you start to pick up photography? How did it happen?
I have always had a keen interest in visual arts and started off learning how to do graphics design as part of a school module sometime in 1998. I was also an avid traveller back in those days and found myself taking lots of pictures on my trips. In 2005, I decided to combine my two interests; bought a DSLR, packed my bags, and never looked back.

Why photography?
We live in a fascinating world. I rely on photography as a tool to help me capture and share what I see and feel at a particular point in time. In taking a picture, one can freeze the moment and take time to examine the scene in detail. I find it liberating that I am no longer bound by the constraints of time in order to appreciate the beauty all around me.

What do you think makes a good photograph?
A good photograph to me, is one that is able to capture the viewer's eyes and tell a story. Many people get too hung up on the technicals and forget about the emotional part of the photograph. A great photograph goes beyond that and captures the viewer's heart, drawing them into the story instead.

What does your favourite usual gear comprise of?
I don't have one favourite gear, it really is about using the right tools for the right job. I used to carry around my full arsenal of lenses and camera bodies for shoots, but lately I have started using my Ricoh GX100 a lot more for it's portability. It is also a lot less intimidating for my subjects as compared to staring down a monster lens on a DSLR system.

How would you describe your work?
Fun, quirky and personable.

Photography is usually seen as a rich man's hobby. What do you think?
I'd beg to differ. Photography has never been cheaper and more accessible. You don't need expensive equipment to enjoy photography. It really is about learning to work with what you have and using that to express yourself creatively that makes photography such a fun hobby.

In your opinion what is the future landscape like for photographers like you?
Cameras are getting smarter. Auto-focus, auto-exposure, face detection, auto-scene selection... You name it. It's much easier these days to get a good sharp well exposed picture compared to in the past when everything was manual.

Future photographers will need to stand out from the crowd with pictures that really tell a story, by the clarity of their images and the strength of their composition. It's going to be tougher to distinguish yourself, but also a lot more fun and more rewarding.
